WE'RE LOOKING FOR OUR NEXT JUNIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER!

The Junior Graphic Designer (JGD) creates visual concepts to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers based on a client creative brief or scope. The JGD develops the overall layout and design for online and print advertisements, logos and brands, as well as brochures, corporate reports, and social media under the guidance and direction of the Art Director (AD). The JGD will focus primarily on typesetting, integrating design across a variety of platforms and working with existing brands. Tasks may be basic to gain experience. 

The JGD has a basic understanding of production techniques and can provide print-ready files under the review of the AD. The JGD can prepare and recommend digital files and solutions for online marketing as well as website design. Informed by current trends the JGD is knowledgeable in industry software, best practices and has an understanding of social media networks.

The JGD has the ability to balance creative problem solving with analytical thinking while being detail-oriented. Working closing with the AD and creative team, the JGD is collaborative and thoughtful. The JGD is a master at time management and produces outstanding, insightful creative work, on time and on budget.

The role is an internal but at times external facing and has scope for career development and enhancing skills across a range of disciplines.

THE REQUIREMENTS

  • Current, relevant portfolio reflecting work across brand development, print and web
  • 2 or 3-year Design Diploma from Red River or other accredited post secondary institution
  • 0-2 years experience
  • Proficient in Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Macintosh platform
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office, WordPress, Mail Chimp
  • Deliver outstanding creative thinking, problem solving and design skills
  • Collaborate with creative and account services team members on concept and execution
  • Developing oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills to communicate thought process, rationale and creative insights
  • Decisive decision making, efficient time management and dedicated to producing thoughtful yet unique creative
  • Self motivated and willing to expand knowledge base
  • An active member in the design community
  • Flexible and able to respond to the changing demands of clients, AD and client services
  • General knowledge in web design including responsive and app generation
  • Ability to self-manage while assisting assigned teams and projects

The JGDs position requires ongoing and interactions with the following:

Internal:  The JGD reports to the AD. As assigned, the JGD creates integrated, consistent creative solutions for client accounts while providing design support to the creative team. Within the agency, the JGD works with all agency personnel in developing and executing deliverables.

External:  The JGD has little client contact however may be present for client meetings.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Annalyzing and Evaluating

  •  Meet with art director or AM/PM to determine the scope of a project
  • Perform research on competitors and market trends
  • Estimate the time required to complete the work and providing time to AM/PM
  • Review content for messaging and layout

2. Coordinating, Managing, Leading

  • Strives for and maintains the highest quality of creative product
  • Actively contributes to the team through the creative process
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with co-workers
  • Provides design support to the creative team
  • Exemplifies the credibility, experience and creativity of our team to clients and the public
  • Meets with AD/client services to discuss creative brief, objectives and requirements of the job
  • Creative thinking to produce new ideas, design and/or concepts for the following: logos, signs, environmental graphics, print, promotional displays, advertising, social media, illustration, websites, online advertising
  • Hones understanding of color, typography, illustration, photography, animation, and various techniques to communicate different messages, character and tone
  • Receives feedback positively and incorporates changes in a timely manner
  • Develops presentations by gathering concepts, information, and research
  • Ability to determine content hierarchy in the creation of website site maps
  • Participates in brainstorm sessions, internal and some client meetings
  • Recommends software and hardware solutions, up-to-date on industry trends
  • Present finalized ideas and concepts to AD and/or client services
  • Develop interactive design components
  • Produce stylistic on-brand recommendations for photography and video

3. Project & Product Management

  • Incorporate web best practices and follow the Honest production guidelines
  • Follow and adhere to project specifications and guidelines and look for clarification when necessary
  • Take responsibility for adherence to project budgets, deadlines and deliverables
  • Proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work
  • Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them
  • Create mockups as required
  • Completes production checklist
  • Learn printer proof and press checking process
  • Keeps up-to-date timefox timesheets
  • Complete docket in timely manner and submits for invoicing

4. Marketing & Sales

  • Contributes to the development of the Agency’s brand, culture and quality standards
  • Assist in developing creative solutions for sales presentations
  • Create portfolio samples from completed work for both print and online
  • Write blog posts and create social media graphics to foster Honest culture and appearance

5. Corporate Culture 

  • Perform regular maintenance checks on computer
  • Uses agency standard software and keeps it up to date
  • Download responsibly
  • Follow internal naming and filing conventions
  • Tidy general and communal work areas
  • Contribute to office maintenance, ie. dishes, stocking, filing
  • Look for professional development opportunities
  • Contribute and attend internal meetings, outtings and brainstorms
  • Develop and contribute to Agency social media and blog
  • Foster a collaborative, fun, casual work environment
  • Resolve conflicts efficiently and discreetly
  • Represent Honest professionally both online and offline, embodying the agency’s core values and differentiating perspectives
